Why  models and framework Models and framework describe the structure of EA, it is considered as the meta EA. Reference models are used to organize EA standards and patterns. It is only used for architecture reference rather than describe the structure of EA. Models, framework and reference models facilitate the communication between architects. It does not serve well for EA awareness.

The evolution of framework and models

The EA Artifact Framework Framework is  a system of rules, ideas or beliefs that is used to plan or decide something or a supporting structure around which something can be built .  [] Zachman Framework has been the popular framework. It is considered as an artifact framework rather than the all-in-one framework. The EA artifact framework is a thinking tool which describe what is EA rather then how to EA. [] It need explicit modeling to describe the approach. It is similar to the plan view of an architecture drawing. It serve as a checklist for EA completeness.

The EA models Model is a representation of something, either as a physical object which is usually smaller than the real object, or as a simple description of the object which might be used in calculations EA models describe the concept of EA. It is similar the elevation view of an architecture drawing.

The EA Design Framework Design framework for the EA architects. Design framework describe the architecture design approach. It is very different from the artifact framework. The design framework must be mapped to the artifact framework. For Example: The “Cake” model of  Enterprise Architecture Planning  approach by Dr. Spewak and the FEAF framework as shown in the next slide.
